To be accurate, that brass "canister".......... *PIC* a Prest-O-Lite acetylene gas generator. It functioned by using a cake of carbide in the lower portion, and a supply of water in the upper part. It operated by allowing a controlled "dripping" of water onto the carbide cake, which resulted in acetylene gas, which fueled the headlights. The system was perfected by one Carl Fisher, of Indianapolis, the profits from this product becoming the seed money to develop the Indianapolis Motor Speedway beginning in 1909. For decades, the "Prest-O-Lite" factory smokestack was a landmark, about a city block south of the first turn at Indianapolis.
