I agree with you that the doors are clunky and ill fitting. They are better off glued in as I've done here, and you intend to do.
The visible hinges are too large and out of scale. I cut them off and then used a lengths of Evergreen round stock to mimic what the hinges look like on the real car.
Also, something I didn't do... once you glue in the doors, you can fill in some of the gap etc with putty. See the light between the door and body in my photo. I couldn't fix it because I decided to glue in the doors after I had painted everything.
