Did we ever get a clear consensus on the MPC '71-'73 Impala/Caprice versus '74-'76 Caprice model kit? Years ago....
I made those comments. No one believed it then and I don't think many believe it now that don't have the actual bodies to compare. Thing is, even IF the '73 body is out there, the chrome is long since modified which means no bumpers/grille besides the interior. *NM*

I'd have to dig to see if 9C1 was still an option for the 2-door in '76 *NM*
Re: I'd have to dig to see if 9C1 was still an option for the 2-door in '76.....It was for the Nova. Had a neighbor that had one, with a 350/4 speed *NM*
I remember Hot Rod magazine had an article describing how to get a 9C1 Nova by checking the correct boxes on the order form, since a civilian couldn't just go into a Chevy dealer and order the 9C1 package...
Your memory is correct, Ronnie. I had one . . .
PS: I traded the Nova for a Z/28. Wasn't as much fun or as fast. *NM*
I remember Tom Carter posting that back in the day he sent detailed info on the evolution of this full size Chevy kit to Karen Sands of Ertl. *NM*
Luc, see down a couple replies for the info, but I never mentioned Karen Sands, as she had nothing to do with future kits. *NM*
My mind must've connected the wrong dots ;) *NM*
Actually, she worked for Ertl, which was before this. Not sure what she actually did. After Tom Haverland and Tom Walsh were both let go JoAnn Kramer called and our extensive efforts were quite productive, as we came up with...
Interesting, thanks for the insight Tom! *NM*
She was basically a PR, trade show and sales support person. *NM*
Yeah I know, but I was trying not to say too much. *NM*
Oops *NM*
The RCMP blue Caprice was a Canada Issue only. It is extremely rare as there probably was not as many were made. It only had a single Bubble Gum roof light and the stop police fender mounted light. These Police parts were in other issues of the Caprice...more
I said earlier that RC2 told me they had located the very elaborate tool that produced the '68 through '72 Chevys and they wanted to know all those kit numbers and which ones I thought would be the best to reissue. That must have been in...
I was loosing faith in them, seeing items being released which I couldn't understand, but it got restored big time with, bringing back the '64 Olds, Nova wagon, mixer and even the
Agreed, I still geek out on the 64 Comet and 59 Imperial reissues. *NM*
Wish I'd picked up a few more of the Comets... but mine are still unbuilt hahaha *NM*
I swiped the chrome out of one to restore a light blue one I have, have a red one and a couple of the kits untouched. *NM*
Had two, sold one a few weeks ago, €30 *NM*
Tom....regarding the '68-'72 Chevy models you mentioned, this is what I think could be available. Please correct me if I'm wrong.....
MPC retooled their '70 into the '71, and the subsequent years. The chassis from the '76 Caprice is EXACTLY the same as the '69/'70!
I'm talking about the body, though. The '71 was completely different than the '69-'70. The '65-'70 had a 119" wb while the '71-'76 had a 121" wb. The '71 had to be a new tool, body and interior-wise. *NM*
They said it was the most elaborate tool to date and that they were able to create the '68 through '72 within it, hence their wanting the info from me noted above. *NM*
I don't how you would make a '68 into a '69-'70, much less a '71-'72. The '69-'70 are related with the '70 being facelifted/updated from the '69. However, the '71 is completely different. Windshield, wheelbase, everything. No offense, but I think they were confused. lol *NM*
Of course that makes sense, but it's not what MPC records show nor what they determined when looking at the tool. *NM*
The primary problem Round 2 might be having with the MPC ‘68-‘73 Full Size Chevies might be the chassis. They probably carried over that same chassis...
The chassis is different though. 119" vs 121". Yeah, I measured them. lol! *NM*
Or, 121.5" if you want to be super accurate. *NM*
Maybe. Or perhaps they modified the same chassis to stretch it? *NM*
It's not uncommon using the same chassis with mods, be it in wheelbase or other features. *NM*
If they still have the '68 and '70 body tool, they could use the AMT '70 Impala chassis. The longer chassis (MPC '76 Caprice) can be used for the '73 body. In fact, the same chassis plate is used from '71-'76.
The later chassis has the catalytic convertor in place *NM*
It is stretched. I'll post pics later. *NM*
Chassis stretch, , , *PIC*
It looks like they added a little more material to the front of the chassis behind the front bumper as well. *NM*
Yea ,, and the '68 has a panhard bar molded to the rear end that the others don't have as well. *NM*
The million dollar question is...if in fact the '74-'76 Caprice is a new body tool, does the '73 Caprice still exist somewhere in Round 2's vast archives? *NM*
The how much, is only part of the question
Lowrider, donk, police or stock. They have all bases covered for max ROI. These land barges are still popular enough. However, if they wait another 10-15 years or so, then l don't know. *NM*
The track record of the current release
